santa fe ski area pit profiles

Post by Bob »

My first pit of the season in the ski area. The coordinates and elevation are off some because I opened the file to edit it and the software reads the GPS location, but the interesting news is the bottom layer isn't sugar and the stability tests were fairly solid. There's a weird 4-5 cm layer at 66 cm from the bottom made up of rime dropped from the trees.

I'm using Ullr Labs mobile avalanche tools app - ullrlabs.com. Seems pretty good.

From 2/5/14 on a NW facing slope of 45 degrees at 11,760 ft. Except for a crust from the long drought, the snow is pretty soft - no slab formation. The collapses during the compression tests didn't have any energy to speak of, and I didn't find any slick bed surface.
