Pre-season reminder

Post by Bob »

There's not much snow locally right now, but it's a good time to be thinking about being safe in the backcountry. Here are some reminders about what we face heading beyond the ropes. Click on these for the ski porn, watch them to increase your awareness:

Let's be careful this season.

Two years ago today we triggered this in the east facing basin of Lake Fork (one skier, one snowboarder, one dog). The slabs released 180 feet away from us along a glide crack as we bootpacked up the slight convex rib that separates the east face from the northeast facing summit couloir, we were about 60 vertical feet below the cliffs.

Our planned route was to ascend to the cliffs then traverse to the saddle. We knew the snow was sensitive and this slide was expected but not when it occured; I was going to ski cut below the cliffs and our bootpack to try to trigger it. As we were climbing above the rocks on the rib we felt and saw three collapses the last of which sent enough energy to the slab to release it. During the ascent after we had assessed the snowpack along the way and the potential for this particular area to slide, we decided to continue, my partner stayed in the relative safety of the rocks and I skinned below making a switchback into the eventual debris field, which could have been a fatal mistake, instead it is a lesson that influences future decisions.
