Re: SF Avalanche Talk
Hey everybody. I am still hoping to come down and give a talk. I want to come when I have a few days to ski around before hand, and I just need to find the time to fit it in. Would people be opposed to a weekday? Wednesday may be the best for me. To add several levels of complexity to my planning, w...

Re: SF Avalanche Talk
Hi everybody, I am very interested in giving a Know Before You Go Avalanche Awareness Talk. I have spent a significant amount of my life in and around the Santa Fe Ski Area. The place is very dear to me, and I am nervous that a avalanche incident will occur in the area before too long. I will contri...

Re: Santa Fe & Nambe
I am Jasper. And I agree with lobo jasper. Skiing in April and May in New Mexico is badder than fuck. It's OK if people know. They will still prefer the classic ski destinations.

Re: Santa Fe & Nambe
Wow lots going on in Santa Fe. Sody, thanks for the recon of the 20180102 avalanches. I will try to get those old newspaper articles posted soon. jpurcellrd, I agree that there is a large lack of avalanche awareness in Santa Fe. I also do not want to police people. When I encourage 'engage others in...

Re: Santa Fe & Nambe
In an effort to promote reporting of avalanches let us judge not. I was home for a couple of days, and I was fortunate enough to catch the Jan 1 powder at Ski Santa Fe. I will say that I really really really wanted to go and look into Nambé on the 1st. I did not go because I could not find a partner...

Re: Taos Region
Let us agree to disagree on the shear quality. I encourage you to use fracture character rather than shear quality. Fracture character is more informative and leaves less room for interpretation. Yes, scrutiny is common when it comes to evaluating a snowpack, as well as in the research that produces...

Re: Taos Region
jbella, I continue to disagree that this is a Q3. A Q3 is defined in Snow, Weather and Avalanches: Observational Guidelines for Avalanche Programs in the U.S. (Greene and others, 2004) as: "Shear surface is non-planer, uneven, irregular and rough. Shear fracture typically does not occur through...

Re: Taos Region
Nice observation and camera work jbella! The sheep video makes me miss home. https://www.instagram.com/p/Brd57whgYAR/ I would like to ask why you reported a Q3 shear quality? It is hard to say without being there in person, but I would rate that as a Q2, or maybe, a Q1. That being said we have exhau...

Re: Strength and Stability Tests
It's cold, the beer is overpriced, but the skiing is pretty good. It has been an active avalanche year so far with lots of activity in the D2 range on NW-N-SE aspects. Most activity has been on NE and E. How is Santa Fe shaking up? I caught a nice lap of pencil hard windslab skiing in Nambe in early...

Strength and Stability Tests
Hello from Silverton Colorado, It seems that folks, particularly in the Santa Fe area, are spending some time doing some tests on the snowpack. I want to supply you with some resources so that you can get the best information possible. Here are some video tutorials from the Gallatin National Forest ...
