December 8 - the wind

Postby Bob » Tue Dec 08, 2009 9:19 am

Wow, I'd expect see some severe wind-loading on the lee (east/north) slopes out of this storm. Nice dense snow will make for a good base where it's stable though.

Any first-hand reports?

snow moisture content

Postby scotthsu » Tue Dec 08, 2009 11:13 am

12% moisture content in the ~14" deep snow in my driveway in Los Alamos. Will try to get up to Pajarito later today; they are reporting 18" new snow as of 5:41am this morning!

Looks like some (predictable) hairiness at the SF ski area:

I'd say it's time to be very, very careful out there.

Just a couple of brief words about the snow pack at Santa Fe ski area. I was up there today but it was too late and too damn cold for me to do any serious analysis, but what I saw was kind of attention-getting. I cruised by the slides that JD discusses in the link in the above post, and was kind of surprised at the instability I found in tree runs like First Tracks and Christmas Trees.

I got some pretty significant whumphing and cracking along the border between First Tracks and Easter Bowl, so I ducked deep into the trees. But in Christmas Trees (between Double Eagle V and the bottom of Roadrunner) I got some whumphing and settling as well. The upper mountain has a lot of sketch right now, so heads up.

I'm hoping to do some more serious analysis of the snowpack early next week. I wonder about long-term instability.
