Sorry, I should have mentioned that. It was due north.

Another pit in the SFSA snow study area. This was before the current storm, and it was interesting:

Today (Wednesday) about 5 inches fell at the ski area. Winds were high - in the 20-25 mph range.

nice analogy with the "keystone," thanks for the link, Bob! We saw some pretty interesting layers in data pits during our avy course at Pajarito last weekend, including an ice layer that represented what we'd been skiing on through most of January before the big storms rolled in that put several feet of new snow on top. If we had a larger backcountry population here in northern NM, I think we would see more avy fatalities.
