I did not question my decisions as I staggered out through pissing trees and hail from an 11 hour Truchas ski excursion.

Touchy loose wet avalanches to size D1.5 were found on W-NW-N aspects Near and Above Treeline. These avalanches were easily triggered by ski cuts in 35-40° terrain at 11:45 and continued to release naturally at 1:00. They ran nearly full track; up to 2250 vertical feet. This problem is predictable, being caused by daytime high temperatures and solar radiation. It is easy to avoid by targeting your travel time to early morning. If you must travel in these conditions use high ground to your advantage and be patient to let these slow moving avalanches pass you by from your high ground stopping points. Even though they are small they carry enough kinetic energy that they can twist your knee, steal a ski, or carry you into terrain traps such as cliffs and creeks.

Snow line in the Truchas is 10500'. Southerly slopes are melted out up to 11500'.

Approaches are long, returns are tedious and a rescue would be lengthly. Consider the risk vs reward of these remote mountains. Enjoy and respect the private property access.

Interesting, and thanks for the beta! We were considering the N chute on Jicarilla Peak this Sunday, but will probably depend on a few things:

1. freezing temps at night and daytime highs/sunlight exposure starting tonight up until Sunday am
2. Potential for thunderstorms sun after 11am
3. potential for new snow that's coming through tonight until Sat afternoon.

We're expecting to have to boot in for most of the approach, as TR 31 is about 9000-10000ft in a valley (could be shaded..)?

If anyone is interested in joining or has any other beta, let me know. Again, condition dependant, we are not opposed to finding another route or line.

Ended up skiing Jicarilla Peak on Sunday. Colder temps all weekend allowed for a 7:30am start at Trampas Trailhead. Snowline wasn't until 10300-10500 on North facing aspects, so we spent a lot of time bushwacking until we arrived at the snowline in the woods (10500 on N facing, 10300 on more protected NW facing--the drainage into the creek).

We skinned through the woods and halfup up the chute, then transitioned to bootpacking the rest of the way. Made it to the top of the peak around 1130, and waited about an hour for the snow to soften. It was windy, cloudy, and probably about 40 degrees up top; the snow was much better down low. The top 1/4 of the chute was solid (but edgeable), then started to corn up down lower, which made for some great skiing.

Overall, it was some fun spring corn skiing with a little bit of type 2 fun in the approach/bushwack.

More pics to come later.

One of our most memorable bushwhacks ever, Jicarilla, May 3, 2009. I'm in DC now for a few years, sorry to miss all the action this spring.

Jasper's experience o/a 12 May is very consistent with observations on Lake Fork Pk area behind Taos same weekend.
Thanks for the report of snow level in the Truchas. I think it's worth the added miles from Trampas TH to go to the Trampas Lakes and ski that beautiful cirque. Am planning to do so on 31 May-2 Jun.
