South San Juan Avalanche Death 1/5/19

Postby rittersam » Mon Jan 07, 2019 8:58 am

Hey all, figured out post this here as some of us like to get up to Red Mountain Pass.

Here's the report: https://avalanche.state.co.us/caic/acc/ ... acc_id=685

Looks like this person was taking part in an avalanche safety class when the whole class was caught.

Be careful out there everyone!

Heartbreaking. I was especially interested in the discussion of the use of digital slope angle overlays, like CalTopo (and I also thought of Fatmap). It made me realize that I've been relying too much on these as a planning tool to manage terrain. I've skied relatively narrow paths that split the difference between slopes of 30-35 degrees, where the digital slope angle shading indicated less than 30 degrees, thinking that I was being savvy. Now this strikes me more as lucky. When I first read the preliminary report, I kept wondering how a skilled group on an Avy 2 Trip could find themselves in this position. It makes more sense now. Thanks for posting these reports on the forum.
