An Avalanche Awareness Course, sponsored by the Carson National Forest, Red River Ski Area, and the National Ski Patrol, will be offered to the public January 11-12, Friday 6 PM to 9:30 PM (classroom session) and Saturday 10 AM to 3 PM (ski area field session). The classroom session of the course will be conducted at the Red River Fire Station. Backcountry skiers, snowboarders, snowshoe and snowmobile enthusiasts are encouraged to attend. Come and learn more about how to safely enjoy winter sports in the backcountry.

The course will cover:
Avalanche hazards, weather, snowpack and terrain evaluation
Route selection, decision making, and self-rescue techniques
Avalanche rescue basics, technique and equipment

Friday PM will be classroom presentations and Saturday will include field exercises in snowpack evaluation and avalanche rescue.

To insure a high quality course, class size will be limited. Pre-registration is due by January 7. You may contact Rob Deyerberg at the Questa Ranger Station, (505) 586-0520, or e-mail at rdeyerberg@fs.fed.us , for additional information.

Marc Beverly is offering an Avy Level 1 class in Santa Fe 2/28, 2/29, and 3/1.
