NNMAE was formed out of the need for information about local conditions affecting avalanche activity in New Mexico. It is an organization maintained by a group of backcountry skiiers who live and recreate in the New Mexico backcountry. Depending on the success of this effort, we will pursue non-profit organization status to support continued development. The information provided on this site is intended to serve as a tool for backcountry travelers who need to make decisions affected by avalanche activity. It is not to be used as a definative answer to backcountry travel or safety, nor is it capable of being such. Ultimately, the decision to travel into the backcountry when avalanche conditions are possible is left to the individual as he or she alone is responsible for his or her decision to recreate in the backcountry.
